Hoouseholds of La Seda

La Seda Homes
Community project. 2018

This project was carried out with the collaboration of the Association of residents of Cases de la Seda, the Historical Archive and the Jardins de la Pau del Prat de Llobregat Center. Its production has been possible thanks to the Photography and Society Scholarship from UNZIP.

The Silk factory in Barcelona was installed in El Prat de Llobregat as an atypical version of an industrial colony. In its expansive phase, a lot of labor was needed, which generally came from poorer areas of the Spanish State. La Seda came to grant housing to some of your workers, a model houses as single-family buildings with the inclusion of community spaces.

Nora Ancarola approaches the process of concession of these houses by the employer's association and the drifts and contradictions they entail. On the one hand, employers kept workers and their families isolated in the framework of equipment that met basic needs (housing, consumption, education and recreation). On the other hand, those workers enjoyed rights that capitalism today has increasingly restricted to social layers with purchasing power. Neoliberal society results in a greater precariousness of the labor market and inaccessible housing prices, as well as difficulties in sustaining the good services of education and public health.
